Meat Rule: Plan for at least 1/2 lb of raw meat per adult for a standard BBQ. If meat is the only protein, bump this to 3/4 lb. For events with lots of sides, 1/3 lb per person may be enough.
Drinks Rule: Estimate 2 drinks per person per hour for the first 2 hours, then 1 drink per person per hour after that. Always have plenty of water available, especially on warm days.

bbq is short form for barbecue, and it appears in many different ways. For instance, one can find it as Bar-B-Q, BarBQ, Bar-B-Que or even Bar-B-Cue. In Australia and New Zealand one simply says “barbie” or “barby“.

The word itself means cooking that uses fire and smoke to prepare foods. However the precise meaning changes according to the place where one lives, and in some parts of the world the definition of barbecue is very debated.

BBQ: Meaning, Foods, Sides and How Much to Cook

In Australia any food cooked on a grill or above flame outside counts as bbq Stuffing, steaks, kebabs, lamb chops and hamburgers all belong to typical bbq here. The shared traits through various styles globally are low temperature and tough meat, that transforms into tenderness.

In a good American restaurant for bbq one finds on the menu beef brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken, pulled pork and hot dogs. All of them are smoked or slowly cooked. One commonly serves them as sandwiches or big plates.

Between popular sides are baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni with cheese, deviled eggs and macaroni salad. Grilled corn on the cob, with green pepper powder, melted butter and bbq rub, forms an excelent side dish.

Grilled tropical fruits, like pineapple, papaya or mango, go surprisingly well with pork, chicken or fish prepared on the grill. Ribs together with pulled pork and homemade baked beans form a classic meal. Four to six ribs for one person is enough, when also other dishes will bee served.

Planning of the amount of food to buy is really important. For one person the best amount of raw meat comes to half to three quarters of a pound. Children normally eat around a quarter of a pound of meat.

Knowing the guests helps, big eaters, little children and older folks all have different portions. Around four servings of finished bbq per person is a good guess. Brisket loses about thirty to fifty percent of its weight during smoking, so one must count that.

Sixteen to eighteen pounds of raw brisket needs around eighteen hours to fully smoke. Twelve to fifteen pounds of Boston butt takes around twelve hours. It is smart to keep some hamburger patties and hot dogs in the fridge, for cases when unexpected guests arrive or picky children wantsomething simple.

For wings served alone, seven to ten pieces per person works well. Preferences for bbq sauce vary too. Good sauce has the right mix between sweetness and bitterness.

Some sauces use cola syrup and applesauce as a base. There are always sides to offer with bbq.
