📌 Note on Contraction: When you mix alcohol and water, the total volume contracts slightly (roughly 3–4% at 40% ABV). The Pearce formula and this calculator use the simplified C1V1 = C2V2 method which is accurate for homebrewing purposes. For precision distilling, account for contraction by adding 3–4% extra water.

The word “homebrew” relates to various things according to the circumstances. It commonly points to the making of beer at home, or programs for running apps on Mac or Linux computer, and also home-made elements for role games like Dungeons & Dragons, or even new games for old video game consoles. Each of those areas has its own group of fans with own tradition around it.

In the world of programs Homebrew is a free and open-source package manager, that simplifies the installation of programs on macOS and Linux. It adds tools, that Apple or Linux system does not carry already from the factory state. The name itself hinted to the idea of building programs on Mac according to personal choice.

Homebrew: Beer, Computer Programs and Games

It is based on Git and Ruby, and fits well with GitHub, so even regular users can use it. Homebrew laid files in a standard place the first time after setup. It involves less than 100 MB of space, if nothing else is added.

The project runs entirely thanks to volunteers without payment, as a not-for-profit group, and it requires money to cover costs of programs, servers and hotsing to maintain the growth.

Homebrew is reliable for use on Mac. It does not alter rights, so it works like average programs. One can install it by means of one single line of command from GitHub, and it works for both macOS and Linux.

Among the popular packages, that one installs through it, are command line tools for services of Amazon Web Services, auto-complete four Bash for faster finishing, calculators and programs for encrypting files.

Now about the beer side. Making beer, wine, cider and mead at home is a nice hobby. It was not federally allowed in United States until 1978.

Many newcomers start by means of extract from malt, and the results commonly give truly good beer. Starter kits are sold at stores like Northern Brewer and Austin Homebrew. Getting into this hobby can cost under 100 dollars.

Although prices of hops and malt barley grow, the whole process yet allows big savings. The ideal of the homebrewing community is a homebrewer in every neighborhood and a club for homebrewing in every city part. The targets are to praise the art, science and joy of fermentation.

Each homebrewer has their reason. Some to compete and make the best type of beer. Others to save money.

Others make beer to invent something entirely original.

Homebrew happens also in video games. In Dungeons & Dragons it shows home-made elements like backgrounds, magic objects, monsters and spells according to own desire. Making such a spell can be this easy, as take an existing one and add tiny changes.

There are also home-made video games for old consoles, thatgives classical machines new games to play.
