You find sweet tea everywhere in the United States, especially in the deep South, where it almost becomes part of everyday life. Believe it or not it also is very popular in Indonesia. The charm happens when one adds sugar or simple syrup to black tea, while it is still warm and brewing…
That is the main secret. Warm tea perfectly dissolves the sugar, while cold water simply does not manage to dissolve it. In the south United States, if you enter a restaurant and simply ask for tea without extra words, you receive sweetened iced tea.
How to Make Sweet Tea
Here it simply is the standard version of tea.
Making it at home does not require big effort. Many folks simply lay five tea bags in a gallon of water and boil the whole thing on the stove. After the tea well brewed, one pours it on the sugar, that sits in the bottom of the pot, and mixes until every crystal fully disappears.
The strength of the sweetness depends on the amount of sugar, that you lay, from one cup up to two for one gallon, according to your own taste. One cup results in somthing fairly gentle, even so many favor more of it.
About brands, Luzianne enjoyed loyal fans for home brewing. Although many classic recipes insist on simple Lipton bags. Truly, the most real south versions commonly take any cheap, plain black tea from the store.
It already became a key part of the typical flavor. Red Diamond works well, if you want another reliable option. There are also powders four sweet tea, basically fast mixes for iced drink, but they never truly caught on in the deep South.
Here is something that deserves a mention: a little pinch of baking soda. It sounds odd, but it changes the whole taste in a good way. One mixes the soda with warm water and sugar, later leaves it simmer, until everything blends.
The drink must be ice cold when one serves it. A slice of lemon at the edge is optional, but a nice touch. Some versions come out almost like syrup; mostly sugar water with tea flavor.
If that sounds too much, mixing equal parts of sweet and plain tea helps to balance everything, while one keeps that known taste of store bought drinks. That mix in half and half is a common request among those that find pure sweet tea a bit too heavy.
There is another way for fully cold brewing. Simply put tea bags in a pot with cool water and leave it to rest for eight up to more than twenty minutes. When the bags come out, give it a good stir before pouring.
Sweet tea is a key south drink, bags soaked, sugar well mixed, it stays cooled for those rough warm days. The famous Sweet Tea of McAlister’s, made since 1946, stays simple with only three ingredients. It is sweet, slipsdown easily and it is woven into the south identity just like Coca-Cola and pecan pie.
