Turkey bacon starts from meat of turkey, so from good meat formed in those slim rectangles, that one sees in the package, later dried and smoked to copy the salty smoky taste of classic pork bacon. It has very low fat; turkeys simply do not have those dense and thick fat layers, that pigs own, so the whole texture and feel end up somehow entirely different than that, to what you probably adjusted.
Some brands genuinely perfected the recipe. For instance, Oscar Mayer reduce the fat by around 58% compared to cooked pork bacon, together with 57% fewer sodium. Butterball go even more far, with 60% fewer fat and 40% fewer sodium, and they entirely skip the sodium glutamate and the fillers.
What is turkey bacon and how to cook it
There is also an option with fewer fat that reaches around 75% fewer fat than pork bacon, naturally smoked by means of wood and prepared without added nitrates or nitrites (only those, that naturally show up in sea salt and in celery powder from farming).
In the list of ingredients for turkey bacon you find quite a lot of normal stuff: turkey, water, sea salt, celery powder, onion powder and some spices, that the brand chooses to add. Nothing exciting here.
Here the secret about cooking turkey bacon: it is surprisingly thin, so also very tender. A bit of oil in the pan genuinely help it become crisp on top and taste much better. According to my experience, fry it slowly works best in medium-low until medium heat, turning it often so that it cook evenly without burning.
After it is ready, lay it on paper towels to make a real difference. You can also put it in the microwave on paper towels above a plate fit four microwave, or use the air fryer. The sweet spot is medium-high heat, and start with a warm pan certainly matters, it will still crisp up even after removing from the heat.
Two slices will give you around 2.5 until 4.5 grams of fat, with almost two thirds of that unsaturated. For one serving there are around 4.8 grams of protein. One single slice of Great Value turkey bacon weighs 14 grams and has 35 calories, 2.5 grams of total fat and 180 milligrams of sodium.
So you get a good amount of protein, but the sodium certainly deserves attention.
Cooked turkey bacon lasts around three days in the fridge, which is handy. I used it on soups, on baked potatoes, tossed it on salads, folded it in wraps and sandwiches or mixed it in egg dishes. If you bake it, it takes around 25 until 30 minutes, and a bit of fresh black pepper before wellstrengthens the taste.
The difference in taste compared to pork bacon is not too big honestly, especially when you use it in something like a BLT wrap, where lots of other flavors take over. For anyone that wants to reduce the fat or boost the protein, it is a good choice.
