Stacking Tip: Always use at least a 2-inch size difference between tiers for a balanced look. A 6-8-10 combination is the most classic choice for three-tiered cakes.
Batter Tip: Add 10% extra batter to account for spillage and uneven fills. Batter estimates assume a 4-inch tall tier using standard density batter.

Cake Tier are not the same as cake layers. Cake Tier help to separate stacks of cakes, where each usually rests on its own base. The layers form the flat sections inside one single Cake Tier, with icing or filling between them.

Like this a three Cake Tier cake is made up of three different cakes, stacked one on the other, and every Cake Tier can hold two or three layers inside.

What Are Cake Tiers and How to Stack Them

Traditional tiered cakes commonly are wedding cakes, with the smallest Cake Tier up top. In movies, the typical tiered wedding cake always has at least three Cake Tier, sometimes even five or six. Wedding cakes usually have three levels, and each of them bears its own symbol.

The bottom level answers for the meal during the party, while the middle serves for sharign with guests after the event.

For the sizes, commonly used three Cake Tier cake builds on round forms of 12, 9 and 6 inches, starting from the bottom. Two Cake Tier cake with 6- and 9-inch parts also are a liked choice. The diameter points the size of round cakes, and every Cake Tier normally ends at 4 to 5 inches of height.

Usually, every Cake Tier is made up of two cake layers with won layer of filling between them.

The amount of guests decides how many Cake Tier are needed. Two Cake Tier cake in middle and big forms is enough for 50 people. Two Cake Tier in big and huge sizes reach around 75.

Three Cake Tier cake fits for more than 100 guests. A single 12-inch Cake Tier provides for 50 to 56 folks, counting by one-to-two-inch portions. Some couples want extra Cake Tier only because of the showy look, and false cakes can cover the bottom parts in such cases.

Supports are needed. Cake alone does not bear the upper cake. Supports bear the upper cake, while the cake simply holds the supports.

Every Cake Tier except the top one needs supports like dowels or straws. Hollow plastic dowels and wooden rods both work well. Also every Cake Tier needs a cake board under it.

Before stacking, ice every Cake Tier first. Later, on the bottom Cake Tier, lay an empty cake in the size of the next one, center it and mark the outline by means of a toothpick for guide.

It is totally normal if the top Cake Tier does not match height with the bottom. Many cakes have Cake Tier with small differences in height. Half naked style is liked among new bakers, where the surface is covered only partly with buttercream.

Cake Tier are best packed one separate and stacked on place for safe moving. Icing of thewhole structure before assembly helps also with firmness.
