Metric units replaced the pint as the main unit for business of volume or capacity, except for sale of beer, cider and milk in glass bottles. The tie with beer goes very deep. For tasting, 3 to 4 ounces is the standard, and a 4-ounce glass works for trying different beers.
Notably, 4 ounces are exactly a quarter of a pint, which you commonly find in bar menus. Historically, American pub owners liked to serve beer in 12-ounce parts instead of pints, and some bars even used 8-ounce or 10-ounce portions.
