The Latte is an Italian creation, made from a simple mix of espresso and steamed milk, that one traditionally serves in a glass. The word itself is surprisingly direct. In Italian it simply means “milk”.
One commonly hears it called caffè Latte or caffellatte, depending on the land where you find yourself.
What a Latte Is and How to Make It
Making a Latte is surprisingly easy. The main recipe is made up of one or two shots of espresso, a big portion of steamed milk and that typical thin layer of frothed milk on top. Especially that smooth froth gives the drink its unique charm.
In any cafe, you will notice that one prepares them with espresso shots and steamed milk, at most stores one uses default 2% milk, covered with only a tiny amount of froth. Here is the whole secret. If someone pours syrup in your Latte without asking, well, that should not happen.
Here is what separates the Latte: the milk is the main star. Unlike the cortado, that puts the espresso in the center, the Latte allows the milk to take the lead. Cortados come in little 4-ounce glasses, while Lattes appear in much bigger cups.
Standard size is a 12-ounce cup, although one commonly offers even bigger. The funny thing is, that no matter the ordered size, the amount of espresso stays almost the same. You simply receive more drnik in a bigger cup.
The base from espresso works as a blank canvas. The taste options are truly endless: pumpkin spice, pistachio, caramel apple, the new ideas always arrive. The iced Latte is the ideal choice for when you want something cold and refreshing.
Different sizes also mean different numbers of shots, so the drink adjusts according too the cup size.
Home made Lattes are not as terrible as they seem. For espresso you need Caffeine beans ground very fine, almost the size of table salt. Getting the right grind and the texture makes all the difference.
A great espresso shot is everything. The ratio that best works is around 1:2 for beans compared to the finished shot, so around 20 grams of grounds should give about 40 grams of espresso in 25 to 28 seconds. For an 8-ounce Latte, I have had luck with 6.5 to 7 ounces of milk.
Oat milk, almond milk and other plant based options work very well also.
Here is the key difference: Lattes use espresso, not filter coffee. That is it. In a good cafe you will always feel the Caffeine below, but the drink tends to be creamy and milky, rather than coffee heavy.
That makes it theadored comfort drink for coffee lovers everywhere, and for good reason.
