Tip: A traditional full afternoon tea with 2 scones, cream and jam, 3 finger sandwiches and 3 pastries totals approximately 900–1,200 calories — roughly half a day’s intake for most adults.
Tip: Swapping clotted cream (100 cal/tbsp) for whipped light cream (25 cal/tbsp) saves about 150 calories per scone without sacrificing the cream tea experience completely.

Afternoon Tea is not simply about drinking Tea. In truth it forms a whole meal by itself. One usually offers it between the 2nd and 5th afternoon with Tea in the centre plus little bites like tiny cakes and sandwiches.

The typical setup is made up of three parts: first sandwiches, then scones with clotted cream and preserve, finally little cakes.

What Is Afternoon Tea?

Sandwiches usually one cuts in little finger shapes or triangles. One can store three to four kinds of small sandwiches with various fillings. Scones form an important part of the enjoyment.

Normally one finds the basic scones, but versions with extras like blueberries or cranberries also appear sometimes. Salty scones, for instance with cheddar-cheese and chives, can serve as an option.

Sweet cakes and pastries complete the spread. Little carrot cakes, cupcakes, sausage rolls or even Battenberg cake wrapped in marzipan all work well. Cakes, squares and baked goods work surprisingly well.

Usually one lays more sweets than salty items. Afternoon Tea does not intend to be lunch with extra dessert. The salty parts help to avoid that the many sweets cause a whole shock of blood sugar.

Usually one served everything on a three-level stand for Tea. One level bears sandwiches, another scones and the third cakes. Small portions work exactly for such occasions.

Afternoon Tea existed as quite an elegant event, first planned for the 4th afternoon. Even Queen Victoria enjoyed that truly British tradition. The custom of drinking Tea in the afternoon maybe came from the 17th century, but Tea as a real meal appeared more late, around the end of the 18th or at the start of the 19th century.

One of the earliest references comes from French Madame de Sévigné, who talked about “Tea in the fifth hour” in her letters.

Seriously know that Afternoon Tea is different from high tea. High tea related more too the northern English region, one offered it more late in the day with heavier dishes. Afternoon Tea, usually around the 2nd until 3rd afternoon, stresses finger sandwiches and little cakes.

London well knows Afternoon Tea. Famous places are The Ritz, the Savoy, Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. Almost all hotels in the West End offer it.

Formal Tea events are fancy and need a bit of process. One can choose drinks besides Tea. Sparkling wines, sloe gin royale or juice-based drinks work.

Having it at home is totally fine, although the big teas of before depended on a whole team of cooks andservants. A little of good stuff makes a great mix.
