Pint is a unit for volume that you use in the imperial and American systems. It matches one-eighth of a gallon or half of a quart. Depending on the system, pint has either 16 or 20 fluid ounces.
The British imperial pint is larger than the American by around 20 percent. In the British system one pint has 20 imperial fluid ounces, so 568 millilitres. American pint normally has 16 ounces, so 473 millilitres
What a Pint Is and How People Use It
In cooking pint commonly appears in recipes. It matches two cups, because one cup has 8 ounces and pint 16. Three-quarters of a pint, so 12 ounces, is enough for a bowl of soup.
Half of a pint or 8 ounces forms one cup of sopu. Quarter of a pint, only 4 ounces, works for part of a multi-course meal.
Pint-sized mason jars work well in the kitchen. Wide-mouth pint jars store 2 cups and work to preserve something like sourdough starter. Recipe for milk preparation advises to use a pint jar with an eighth teaspoon of baking soda, to leave space at the top.
