Cooking roast beef in a air fryer requires understanding the relationship between the cut of the roast beef, the cooking temperature, and the amount of time the roast beef will cook in the air fryer. Different cut of roast beef contain different levels of fat. Cuts like top round and eye round that is lean have little fat.
Because of the lack of fat, these lean cuts of roast beef will cook relatively quick in the air fryer; however, the lack of fat also mean that lean cuts will dry out if cooked for too long. Cuts like chuck roast, in contrast, contain more fat. The fat require longer cooking time to render fully in the roast beef.
How to Cook Roast Beef in an Air Fryer
The space within the air fryer basket must be managed. Air fryer work by circulating hot air around the roast beef; the roast beef must have space within the air fryer to allow the hot air to circulate around the roast beef. If the roast beef is crowded within the air fryer basket, the cooking of the roast beef will be uneven.
Therefore, the cook should only add the roast beef to the air fryer until the air fryer basket reach 75% of its capacity. Adding the roast beef to 85% of the air fryer basket will slow the cooking process; you’ll need to rotate the roast beef halfway through cooking to ensure even browning of the roast beef. The internal temperature of the roast beef should be monitored.

However, for cuts that contain marbled fat like chuck roast, the cook can reduce the cooking temperature to 360 degrees Fahrenheit to allow the fat to render. For lean cuts of roast beef like eye round, the cook may set the cooking temperature to 390 degrees Fahrenheit to allow the roast beef to sear quick in the air fryer.
Cooking temperatures within the air fryer will affect the roast beef; cooking at higher temperature will cause the roast beef to crust on the outside of the roast beef before the roast beef is fully cooked in the interior of the roast beef. Altitude will also impact the cooking times and temperatures of the roast beef. At altitudes above 3,000 feet, the cook should increase the cooking time by 8%.
Additionally, the cook may need to increase the cooking temperature within the air fryer to account for the higher altitude; however, at sea level, the cooking times and temperatures will be straightforward and not require the adjustment based off altitude. To prepare the roast beef to be cooked in the air fryer, the roast beef should be patted dry with a paper towel. The dryness of the roast beef will allow the roast beef to crisp without steaming within the air fryer.
The roast beef should be seasoned with salt and pepper; rosemary may also be used as a seasoning. Finally, the cook should slice the roast beef against the grain to allow for ease in chewing. Following these steps will ensure that the roast beef cooked in the air fryer has a crispy exterior and a precise level of doneness.
