To cook rice in a pressure cooker, a persons must manage the ratio of water to rice. The ratio of water to rice will determines the texture of the cooked rice. If there is too much water to the rice, the rice will become mushily.
If there is too little water to the rice, the rice will remain crunchy. Because the pressure cooker use steam to cook the rice, the use of steam allow the rice to cook more faster than if it was cooked in a pot on the stovetop. Different type of rice require different amount of water to achieve the best texture.
How to Cook Rice in a Pressure Cooker
White rice is a common type of rice to use in a pressure cooker. Jasmine rice and basmati rice are two different type of fragrant rice that often require more water than white rice to enhance an aroma of the rice. Brown rice is a different type of rice than white rice.
Because brown rice contain a bran layer, it require more water than white rice, and takes more time to cook. If a pressure cooker is use at high pressure, less water are required to cook rice than with medium or low pressure, as high pressure is more efficiently at adding water to the rice. The altitude at which a person cooks with the pressure cooker can also impact the rice cooking process.
At high altitudes, the boiling point of water is lower than at sea level. Because water boil at a lower temperature at high altitudes, water evaporate at a faster rate. To compensate for this loss of water, more water should be added to the pressure cooker when using the rice pressure cooker at high altitude.
If the altitude is above 3,000 feet, the water and cooking time should of increase. Another way to control the texture of rice in a pressure cooker is to soak the rice. Soaking rice prior to adding it to a pressure cooker will allow the rice to plump up.
Additionally, soaking rice will reduce the amount of time that it take to cook the rice. For example, basmati rice can be soaked in cool water for 10 or 20 minutes prior to adding it to the pressure cooker. If the rice is not soak in water, it will cook faster.
The method that is use to release the pressure from the pressure cooker will determine the texture of the cooked rice. If the pressure is released quickly, the rice will become firm. Quick release is useful for those who wish to prepare rice that will be use in dishes like fried rice.
If the pressure is allowed to naturally release, it will take 10 or 15 minutes for the pressure to naturally release. If natural release is use, the rice will be softer, and the rice will expand in volume. The amount of rice that will be cooked in the pressure cooker must also be consider.
If too much rice is to be cooked, the rice should not be added to the pressure cooker past the fill line. If too much rice is added to the pressure cooker, the steam may become blocked, or the rice may boil over. If a large batch of rice is to be cooked, the pressure cooker must be large enough to cook the rice without overfill it.
The age of the rice can also impact the cooking process. Rice that has been sitting in a pantry for an extended period of time may become dried out. Because the rice is dried out, it may require more water than fresh rice to properly cook.
Additionally, the rice should be rinse prior to adding it to the pressure cooker. However, if the rice that is to be cooked is sushi rice, the rice should not be rinsed too aggressive, as rice contain starch that creates the sticky texture of sushi rice. Brown rice is less forgiving than white rice, and the water level for brown rice must often be closely monitored.
There are different setting for the pressure cooker. Medium heat setting are best for most rice varieties. However, high heat will reduce the amount of time that it take to cook white rice to approximately five minutes.
The total time for the rice to cook is the time to reach pressure, the cooking time, and the release of the pressure from the cooker. By following the step and considering the different variable in the rice cooking process, the result will be successful rice cooked in a pressure cooker.
